Here are a few questions I would like you to answer and then discuss with your fellow students, using the video we saw on "disappearances and torture" and the paper on "Violations in US prisons and Jails".

1- Explain why and how crisis’ situations lead to disrespecting human rights. How is it possible that measures taken to combat terrorism do not comply with human rights, refugee or humanitarian rights? How do disappearances happen if they are not justifiable?

2- What do you think of the links between disappearances and the war on terror?
a) Repression justified by anti-terrorist campaigns
b) Practices of extraordinary ‘rendition’ by the USA and aided by Western Allies
c) Existence of ‘ghost prisons’ or ‘black sites’ where terrorists are detained on the bequest of American Authorities

3- Explain the term ‘disappearance’, how can this happen?

4- Explain why torture can produce unreliable information.
